Hello. I’m really grateful for your family’s existing on planet earth. It is rather shocking to me to have heard of your father and your brothers playing at this time, meaning at 2019 I wish I had when I was 12. I know I can’t ask for something so valuable like this, but do you know where I can download an album on Jimmy rainey or doug raney. The reason im asking this is im studying music the same way they did, with listening. Leaving it to the subconscious whilst really enjoying it, please dont be offended by me making that assumption, the only thing that comes to mind to me finding a meaning to your father’s and brother’s playing is that they loved it more than anything else in the whole existence:) . Now the reason im asking this is, the present status of my economical situation doesn’t allow me to actually buy the record like they deserve and all of you deserve. So if you don’t mind a faithful kid be allowed to listen to that wonderful jazz, would you share at least a song, please:) Thank you, send peace, and lots of love:)

      Thanks for your comments.

Simo, in terms of songs to share? I’m not sure what you mean. There are several tracks at this site to listen to with full transcriptions at no cost to you that you can learn from. Have you looked at my entire site? This is addition to tons of tracks being available – rightly or wrongly for free via youtube. I’m sure you can find tricks to record via a browser tool. I know I have in the past

      Best wishes

Hello Petri here, and iam live in Finland
I am listening Jiimmys music about 20 years, and now listening Dougs records couple year, i like both very much, incredibly players, and iam interested Dlugs gears, i know he used p90 and Attila Zoller pickups guitars, but what brand strings he used brand and gauge, flats or roundwound strings, and what picks he used and what gauge?
Dougs playing sounds Jimmy and Pat martino.
How he practiced, very great comping and solo, is he know Barry Galbraith.
Iam curious, thank you very much👍

Hi there, I think he preferred d’addario half rounds, 12 gauge? probably. He used a hard pick. Probably a fender.

But at the risk of sounding a little snobby, it’s about the ear not the gear 🙂

In terms of practicing. I think he pretty much learning by just figuring out solos. He learned quite a few and slowed them down and not just guitar players. Lots of horn players.

In terms of comping I think he learned a lot about how to accompany by making recordings for himself to play along with. He had a big reel to reel recorder where he made tons of tapes of himself – comping on one track and playing on another. I think this makes you sensitive to how to comp, what voicings to play, volume and timing. There was no metronome, just him.

I discovered Jimmy and Doug about a year ago, and I enjoy coming back to them periodically for a listen, which I am doing now. I am always amazed at these relatively obscure (at least from a popular culture p.o.v.) geniuses, so devoted to their craft. A lot of people are critical of digital music platforms such as youtube and spotify, but it does allow people like me to discover new sounds by way of browsing, like a treasure hunt. Thank you for taking the time and effort to maintain this website, to help their legacy to continue. Peace, Matt

      Hey Matt,

I think it’s great that you got to the site from Youtube. We live in a different era. It’s all good

      Best wishes
